Hawk in a Plum Tree, Biting Its Talon

Mid-to late Edo period. 191 X 62cm

This expressive ink and colour painting depicts a raptor perched in a blossoming plum, biting
its talon in a moment of tension and control. The posture evokes the dualities of restraint and
readiness, austerity and beauty—central themes in Edo-period samurai and literati culture.
Though the artist is unknown, the refined brushwork and compositional daring suggest a painter
well-versed in symbolic idioms. The scroll has survived in weathered condition, yet its impact
remains undiminished.
